The purpose of the review was to collect data about:
- Current policy and research issues
- Issue trends over time
- Data used for postdoc information
- Data needs for the postdoc community

Phase 2 literature review A review of postdoc literature from popular, scholarly, and government sources. It was conducted in 2008, and features more than 200 entries categorized into 13 broad topics. The second literature review includes books, presentations, periodicals, and government reports.

Review of physician-scientist career pathways A review of student-created resources, professional associations, government funding information, and scholarly articles about research-oriented MDs. It explores of the:
- Multiple pathways to research independence for MDs
- Unique considerations for surveying PhD-equivalent postdocs in medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy
- NIH and private-sector grants that fund research for PhD-equivalent scientists
- Use of the term “postdoc” and other descriptors
