Postdoc Definitions Project

Postdoc definitions were explored through a series of studies relying on content analysis, qualitative research, and quantitative studies. Definitions were analyzed from the establishment and from the individual perspective to better understand:

  • How postdocs are currently being defined by institutions and amongst themselves
  • Similarities or differences in postdoc definitions and job titles within and across employment sectors
  • Definitional components that distinguish a postdoc from other research staff
  • Whether the same definitional elements applicable for postdoc who are PhD-degreed versus professional degreed
